The 280 GSM jersey fabric is knit from a blend of recycled cotton collected during the yarn-spinning process, offcuts from our Double Heavyweight T-shirts, and luxurious extra-long staple cotton. Knit at low tension and slow speed, the result is a fabric that feels soft and bouncy, with a rich slubby texture throughout.
That texture interacts beautifully with natural dyeing, as the variations within the fabric absorb colour at slightly different rates, creating even greater depth. Here, the garment is hand-dyed in Amami, an island chain in southern Japan with a centuries-old dyeing tradition.
The Sharinbai tree, native to Amami, has long been used in the region's dyeing traditions. Its wood yields a natural dye of warm, rosy color, brought to life as artisans hand-dye each piece with the same methods passed down through generations. To complete the dyeing process, artisans employ dorozome, Amami's renowned mud-dyeing technique. By soaking the fabric in iron-rich mud, the minerals settle into the fibres, deepening the colour in a way only possible through this traditional method.
